چکیده

Coastal environment is controlled by a complex interaction of physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes. Physical processes are responsible for controlling the transport and distribution of all dissolved and suspended matters in coastal waters. A comprehensive understanding of these processes is crucial to the design and implementation of management strategies that track ecosystem health and protect coastal and estuarine waters from environmental and ecological disasters. To characterize the temporal processes occurring in the ocean, new types of infrastructure equipped with novel techniques, such as acoustical tomography, to facilitate cutting-edge oceanographic research are needed. These methods are capable of providing long-term, highresolution observations of critical environmental parameters.

Real-time acoustic tomography system and the experience of Caspian current sea monitoring

The Acoustic Tomography (AT) systems are used to monitor long-term and continuous flow in rivers, seas and oceans. One of the disadvantages of existing systems in Iran is the inability of real-time/automated measurements. In this study, by adding a raspberry Pi computer to the system and performing the required programming, it was possible to do online monitoring. The data are transferred to th...

Occurrence of Pathogenic Vibrios in Coastal Areas of Golestan Province in Iran

This study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of potentially pathogenic species of vibrio in sea water and estuarine environments of the Caspian Sea in the Golestan province of Iran. A total of 127 water samples from coastal waters as well as from river and estuaries were collected and analyzed by culture, during April and September 2001. Following prompt centrifugation, the resusp...

Remote Sensing of Tidal Situation by Monitoring Changes in Suspended Sediment Concentration in Surface Waters

Collecting information on suspended sediments concentration (SSC) in coastal waters and estuaries is vital for proper management of coastal environments. Traditionally, SSC used to be measured by time consuming and costly point measurements. This method allows the accurate measurement of SSC only for a point in space and time. Remote sensing from air-borne and space-borne sensors have proved to...

Remote Sensing of Temperature and Salinity Microstructure in Rivers and Estuaries Using Broadband Acoustic Scattering Techniques

The long-term goals of this research are to 1) measure and understand high-frequency broadband acoustic scattering in rivers and estuaries characterized by strong temperature and salinity gradients and intermittent, high dissipation rates of turbulent kinetic energy, and 2) use these measurements and understanding to develop a remote sensing tool for quantifying the structure of stratified turb...
